Researchers found out that Positive airway pressure (PAP) machines improved signs and symptoms amongst youngsters with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) months after PAP commencement.

An improvement in the symptoms was observed among 172 out of 221 children after 3 months and in 81 out of 90 children after 1.5 to two years.

As per another study, roughly 56% of those who reported improvement in symptoms after three months of PAP usage and had appropriate adherence data were nonadherent; similarly, about 49% of those who reported improvements after two years were declared nonadherent.

Reduced focus, hyperactivity, memory impairment, learning difficulties, nocturnal enuresis, and development impairment were all symptoms that were particularly relevant to children with OSA. The researchers concluded that improvements in these symptoms with PAP were crucial markers of improved clinical outcomes in this cohort and that more study was needed to confirm these findings. The findings were reported at SLEEP 2022, in a joint meeting of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society. (MedPage Today June 5, 2022)
